Layered elegance: public space redefined with steamed natural ash

When large volumes meet human-scale materials, magic happens. This multi-tiered architectural installation features steamed natural ash - a new addition to the NordicWall palette - used here to soften and structure a large open hall with fluidity and calm.

The panels run across both vertical and horizontal surfaces, creating visual cohesion across the walls, balconies, and even ceilings. The use of directional lamella work ensures acoustic balance and draws the eye through the space without distraction.

What is steamed ash?

Steamed ash is a lightly heat-treated variation of European ash, which enhances the wood’s natural cream and honey tones while improving its dimensional stability. The result is a pale, elegant timber with subtle grain movement - ideal for bright, modern interiors.

Unlike thermo-treated wood, steamed ash maintains its lighter character while gaining additional resistance to warping and humidity fluctuations - making it especially suitable for public venues, lobbies, museums, and educational spaces.

Form that follows acoustics

The scale of the installation required a modular system that could adapt to curved geometries and continuous surfaces. NordicWall panels were CNC-milled with varied projection depths to create a rhythm that also disperses sound waves and prevents echoing in high-ceilinged environments.

Thanks to the quick-mount substructure system, installation was carried out efficiently with minimal downtime, even in operational areas. Integrated lighting enhances the vertical rhythm, casting soft shadows that amplify the material’s warmth.

Material makes volume human. With steamed ash, NordicWall delivers a sense of clarity, calm, and permanence - even in the largest of spaces.
