Prints and licensing

Every frame in the journal is available as a print, and most of them can be licensed for editorial or commercial use. This page sets out how the editions are made, what a licence covers and how to ask for either; the terms are short on purpose.

Editions

Prints are made to order on a matte fibre paper with a deep, even black and no surface sheen, so the photograph reads the way it does on screen in a dim room. Each print is numbered, signed on the reverse and shipped flat in an archival sleeve within three weeks.

A print is the only version of a photograph that does not depend on somebody else's screen.

Open editions are printed at A3 and A2; a few frames exist as limited editions of twelve at larger sizes, and those are marked on the journal entry itself. Framing is left to you and your framer, with the paper size and a generous white border to work with.

Licensing

Editorial use in print or online is licensed per image for a single title and a single territory, for one year unless we agree otherwise. Commercial use is quoted separately and always includes the intended context, because the same frame can mean very different things on a book jacket and in a campaign.

  • Personal use with a credit is free; a link back to the journal is welcome.
  • Editorial licences are issued within two working days of a request.
  • Commercial licences come with a written scope and a fixed fee, never a per-view rate.
  • No frame is licensed for training image models, under any terms.

Write to hello@example.com with the journal entry, the size or the use, and where it will appear. I answer everything myself, usually the same day.
