Cotton Top

Cotton-top tamarin looking into the camera
Photograph by Sergio Mena Ferreira

A portrait session with a subject that weighs less than the lens. The tamarin sat on a branch for four seconds, looked straight down the barrel and left; the frame is the four seconds.

Eye contact

Portraits of animals work the same way as portraits of people. Wait for the look, and be ready when it comes.

The sanctuary asked for pictures that make people care. Eye contact does that; a tamarin looking at the horizon is wildlife, a tamarin looking at you is a neighbour.

The largest neighbour I have photographed, the following spring. Photograph by Yifan Han.

A 300 mm at f/4, the keepers behind me and a bucket of fruit behind them. The fruit is why the tamarin came. The look is why it stayed.
