Crowd at an outdoor event, faces turned to the light

Photography series · Documentary

Front Row

The front row of a festival, photographed from the stage with a flash and a wide lens. Nobody is looking at the camera because nobody knew it was there; they were looking at the band.

From the stage

Three songs, then out. The frame is the faces, the phones and the one person in the middle who saw me.

A crowd photographed from the front is an audience. Photographed from the back it is a crowd. The band wanted the audience, and so did I.

Dancer mid-kick against a teal wall
The opening act, an hour earlier, from the same spot. Photograph by Isaac Macdonald.

Flash on the camera, which every photographer will tell you never to do, and which is the only way to light a hundred faces at once from three metres. Rules are for the second song.
