Looking up into an ornate stone arch and its coffered ceiling

Under the Arch

A gateway in the old town, one arch and a ceiling carved by someone who knew nobody would look up. I photographed it from underneath with the lens pointed straight at the keystone.

The ceiling

The picture is the coffers. Everything else is there to hold them up.

Six hundred years of people walking through, and the ceiling has been photographed properly perhaps a dozen times, because you have to lie on the ground to do it and the ground is a road.

Old city of domes and a minaret under a hazy sky, a flag on the rooftop
The city the gate opens onto, from a roof the next morning. Photograph by Heba Alwahsh.

A wide lens, the camera on the paving, and a policeman who asked what I was doing and then asked to see the screen. He had walked under it for twenty years. He had not looked up either.
