Field After Rain

Green butterfly resting on a wet leaf

A leaf still heavy with water and a butterfly that stayed long enough for three frames. The garden returns to colour after the storm, one drop at a time, while the light comes and goes between the clouds.

Timing

Storm light lasts minutes. I had the frame lined up before the rain stopped and shot through the first break in the cloud. The butterfly arrived on its own, sat, opened, closed, and left; the three frames are the whole visit.

Nature photography is often described as patience. It is closer to attendance: you have to be there, ready, every time it might happen, and it happens on perhaps one visit in ten.

The rain does the work. You are there to notice when it stops.

Close and wide

One macro lens for the leaf, one wide for the field, and a towel for the camera. The wide frames are in the series for scale: a butterfly on a leaf is a detail, a field of poppies is a place, and the story needs both.
