Looking up through a dark rock opening to a bright sky

The Opening

A cave on the coast with one hole in the roof, and the twenty minutes a day when the sun comes through it. I lay on the sand at the bottom and photographed the sky.

The hole

The picture is the shape of the opening. Everything else is dark on purpose.

The fishermen call the cave the eye. From the sea it is a slit in the cliff; from the sand inside it is the sky, cut out with a knife.

The arch a few coves along, at the other end of the day. Photograph by Evgeni Tcherkasski.

Exposed for the sky, so the rock is black. A camera would happily show the rock too, and the picture would be a cave. This way it is a window.
