Four, Going South

Four birds in flight against a pale, empty sky
Photograph by Stephanie Gibeault

Four birds against a sky the colour of paper, photographed from a field at the end of the season. There were hundreds; the frame is the four that happened to line up.

Empty sky

The exposure sits two stops over what the meter wants, so the sky goes white and the birds become shapes. It is the closest a photograph gets to a drawing.

A flock is noise. Four birds are a sentence. I waited an hour for the flock to thin to a sentence and it did, once, for a second.

One of them, three weeks earlier, still at home in the hedge. Photograph by David Waite.

Printed small, on matte paper, with a wide border. Some pictures want to be large. This one wants to be looked at closely and then left alone.
