The person behind the notebook

Notes on photographs, short walks and the subjects that find their way into this journal.

I'm interested in the small decisions that make a photograph feel like a particular moment. Where someone stands, what is left at the edge of the frame and whether the picture has room to be a little untidy. Those are the kinds of things I want to spend time with here.

The notebook gives the words somewhere to begin. A street name, a colour beside a doorway or an unfinished thought can stay on the page until there is something more to say. Not every observation needs to become an article. Some are useful simply because writing them down makes them easier to remember.

What catches my attention

I like a story that starts close to its subject. A room, a journey across town or an afternoon spent making something gives the reader a place to stand. From there, the piece can follow an idea without having to announce a large lesson at the beginning.

Photographs and words do different kinds of work. A picture can hold a gesture that would take too long to describe. A paragraph can explain why a small detail matters, or admit that something remains uncertain. I want each to have enough space to do its part.

A notebook is useful because it can hold a thought before you know what to do with it.

Keeping the journal open

There is no single route through these subjects. A story about a portrait may lead to one about a street; a street may lead to a meal or a view from a train. That movement is part of the appeal of a small journal. Its interests can become clearer without becoming narrower.

If a piece leaves you with one detail to notice on your next walk, it has done something useful. You can take that thought with you and leave the rest of the page here.
